Recalls
- When you give your dog a recall command use a friendly tone of voice. Do not use a drill sergeant tone. Would you want to walk over to someone that was speaking to you that way?
- When you give your dog the command to come you need to be the most interesting thing in the entire area. You can accomplish this with your body language and your tone of voice. It also helps if you get down on your hands and knees.
- Every time your dog does come to you when called make sure you praise him lavishly. Your dog should feel that coming to you is the best thing in the world. You may even want to take a few minutes to get down on the floor for a little play time.
- Do not ever call your dog to you if you are going to do something to him that he dislikes such as giving him a bath, trimming toenails, doctoring a wound, crating, etc.. If your dog loves baths then go ahead and call him to you but if he does not then go and get your dog.
- If your dog does not come to you when you call him if at all possible go and get him. When you get him do not yell at him, in fact do not say anything. Bring him back to the exact spot you called him from and then praise him lavishly.
- If you call your dog and he runs off do not yell at him when he returns. This will only start your dog thinking that coming to you is a bad thing to do. After all no one wants to do something they get yelled at for and your dog does not understand the fact that you are upset because he ran off. Instead he thinks you are mad at him for returning.
