Holiday Homework

GAP Service Dogs decided, this year our students deserved a long break over the holidays. So we gave everyone a 2 week break from class. I am told that this is a first in the entire history of GAP Service Dogs. Amazing don’t you think? Over 10 years and this is the first time we have canceled class for a holiday other than Easter.

In order to keep everyone working well with their service and therapy dogs over this extended break, one of our incredibly dedicated volunteers sent the rest of us some extra homework. One of our weekly assignments was as follows:

This homework is aimed at keeping one eye on your dog when you are doing something like chatting, shopping, or otherwise being distracted, so that we can capitalize on a chance to correct/teach. Often when we are occupied in some way we do not notice our dogs sniffing something, going up to another dog or person, or doing some other unacceptable behavior. We then lose on an opportunity to teach/anticipate a problem and remind our dog to stay on task before a small issue escalates.

This week please practice “keeping one eye on your dog” in most situations. Especially anytime your dog is in vest.

Please also remember that our goal is to “praise” our dogs 10 times for every 1 “correction”.

Earlier this year Guild Assistance Dog Partners was honored to be presented with the Colorado Cross Disability Coalitions Non-Profit Excellence award for 2011. Now is the time for GAP Dogs to increase the number of clients we are able to assist with transportation to our weekly classes and events!  We have now placed over 300 dogs. Our service and therapy dogs work in businesses, schools, hospitals and nursing homes all over Colorado! Our service and therapy dog programs are an incredible asset to Colorado’s communities. So, let’s promote ourselves and get this fantastic program some funding!

Pepsi Company is giving away 1.3 million dollars at the end of November.

We desperately need a new van with a commercial lift in order to transport all our clients and their service dogs to various training locations. Right now we can only load 2 power wheelchairs and 2 collapsible manual wheelchairs. Many of the people we serve are unable to transport themselves to many of our training opportunities. We do not have nearly enough passenger capacity. With the price of fuel constantly increasing and no end in sight we also need funds for fuel!

GAP Dogs has applied for a 50K grant through the Pepsi Company. If our idea is chosen we will be notified on November 1st at 12pm. Voting will begin immediately and continue until November 30th at 12pm. Please go to Pepsi Refresh Everything and sign up for a Pepsi account today!

This Article About Rory was Recently Pulished

While my family and I were living our dream of biking to the far corners of the world, my sister and her husband were living a different kind of dream – the getting-a-guide-dog kind of dream.

My sister’s dream started off in an unlikely manner. As Glenda Sathre and her husband, Rory Greenway, walked across a WalMart parking lot, Glenda leading so she could alert her husband to possible obstacles, they met a woman with a service dog heading towards a vehicle that had Guild Assistance Dog Partners, Inc. (GAP) decals on it. Click here to read the rest of the story….

Guild Assistance Dog Partners Presented with Award

The Colorado Cross Disability Coalition holds an annual awards ceremony to honor those whose work improves the live of persons with disabilities. On July 26, 2011 GAP Dogs was presented with the non-profit excellence award by the CCDC. The people at GAP Dogs are honored to have such an award bestowed upon us.

Thank you Mark and Joe for the nomination. Thank you to all the financial contributors, puppy raisers, trainers and volunteers that make GAP Dogs possible. Without all of you we never would have made it this far.

I would also like to thank the recipients of our service dogs for becoming a part of the GAP family. It is an honor to have the opportunity to watch as the team work between you and your k9 partner improves one class at a time.
